Submarine Museum

Reputed to be the first and only Submarine Museum (Muzium Kapal Selam) in Malaysia will be opened to public on 22 November 2011 for 10 days.  Thereafter, the Submarine Museum will be closed for refurbishment work and will be reopened on 17 December 2011.  One of the main attraction of the Submarine Museum is that it will house the decommissioned Agosta 70 class submarine named SMD Ouessant.

The Submarine Museum project cost the State Government RM12.6 million and will be the 25th museums under the management of Perbadanan Muzium Melaka (PERZIM). The submarine was transported from Brest, France and successfully arrive in Melaka on 13 November 2011.

Built in 1979, the French made submarine measured 67.57 meter in length, 11.75 meter in heigh and 6.5 meter in width. SMD Ouessant was previously used for training submarine crew in Malaysia from 2005 to 2009 following the acquisition of two submarines by the Ministry of Defense of Malaysia.

Before the decommission of SMD Ouessant, the submarine was widely regarded as a silent weapon. It is capable of carrying 40 crewmembers and is equipped with Thomson CSF DRUA 33 radar system. SMD Ouessant has a speed of 12 knots when submerging on the surface and 20.5 knots while moving under water. The Agosta 70 class submarine also has a ECAN F17 Mod 2 torpedo that is capable of moving at a top speed of 40 knots and hitting a target at a range as far as 20km.

Operation Hour

Open for 10 days from 22 November 2011 from 9.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

Admission Fee

The submarine is currently open for public viewing at no cost for 10 days. However, a different set of entry charges will be imposed once the Submarine Museum reopened in 17 December 2011.
